What causes alopecia areata?
Alopecia is caused by an abnormality in the immune system which causes your immune system to attack and damage your hair follicles. This then results in the hair falling out. In many cases, it can be linked to other autoimmune diseases including vitiligo and lupus.
How is alopecia diagnosed?
At our hospital in Marbella, we aim to give you an accurate diagnosis as soon as possible. Our doctors will review your symptoms and will often examine a few samples of your hair to determine what is causing it to fall out.
In some cases, a scalp biopsy may also be carried out to rule out any other conditions that could potentially be causing your hair loss. In some cases, the team at our hospital in Marbella will carry out a blood test if they believe you may have an autoimmune disease which could be linked to your hair loss. Generally, though, we will be able to get a diagnosis to you quickly.
Treatment
The amazing team at our hospital in Marbella know that not everyone responds to or likes the same treatment method.
We will usually recommend a series of medical treatments such as a rub-in medication which can be applied directly to the scalp to help stimulate hair growth, steroid injections or other medicated creams and ointments.
Alternative therapies are also available and you can discuss these with a member of our team at any stage of your journey with us.
It's important to remember however that alopecia has no permanent cure and your hair may fall out again at a later date. If it does - we'll be here for you whenever you need to see us.
